Anatomy with Movement: Intrinsic Muscles of the Core Utilizing the Anatomy in Clay Learning System
This 4 hour workshop will explore the deep muscles and fascia of the "core" including the transversus abdominis, respiratory diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, thoraco-lumbar fascia, lumbar multifidus, rotatores, interspinales and intertransversarii. The research of Panjabi, Hodges, McGill, Richardson and others suggests the intrinsic myofascial system influences intra-abdominal pressure and improves segmental vertebral and sacroiliac joint stability. The deep stabilizing muscles have been shown to activate prior to movement (feed-forward mechanism) and increase the efficiency of force generated by the extrinsic core muscles. This workshop uses the Anatomy In Clay Learning System to build the intrinsic myofascial system and includes a movement lab to help the student better understand its function. References will be provided.
Objectives: By the end of this workshop the students will:
1.Know the boney attachments of the deep stabilizing muscles of the spine and pelvis 2.Understand research supporting the function of the deep stabilizing muscles of the spine and pelvis 3.Understand how the deep spine stabilizing muscles are influenced by of the thoraco-lumbar fascia 4.Be able to demonstrate movements that facilitate stability of the lumbar spine and pelvis.
