Porpentine is pleased to announce its January 2015 residency at the Nave Gallery in Somerville, MA, where we will perform Michael Frayn's Copenhagen.

Thursdays are half-price or more - it all depends on you.

Refreshments will be available for donation and purchase.

DIRECTIONS:
The Nave Gallery is a three minute walk from Teele Square, and a 12 minute walk from Davis Square. It is accessible by the 87, 88, and 89 buses. We encourage you to take advantage of public transportation. If you are driving and do not have a Somerville resident sticker, you will be ticketed on neighboring streets.

In Copenhagen, Frayn re-imagines the famous 1941 meeting of physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, which has been subject to much speculation. Heisenberg was Bohr's finest student and then colleague. His warm relationship with his mentor was damaged beyond repair during this 1941 meeting in Copenhagen. No one knows what exactly the two men discussed. What did Heisenberg believe could be done, and should be done, about atomic bombs? What did he want from Bohr? These questions call up many powerful issues and emotions involving Nazi Germany and nuclear war.

Frayn's Copenhagen revolves around Heisenberg and Bohr's falling out over the moral ramifications of what they have done. The spirits of the two men and Bohr's wife Margrethe, meet after death to attempt to answer the question, why did Heisenberg come to Copenhagen? As they debate and reject possible answers to that question, the conversation addresses nuclear power and its control, the rationale behind building or not building an atomic bomb, the uncertainty of the past and the inevitability of the future.

Copenhagen is Porpentine's second production, following a successful run of Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons earlier this year. R. Nelson Lacey, Floyd Richardson, and Ann Carpenter portray Heisenberg, Bohr, and Margrethe. Jon Taie directs. Sharon Lacey designs sets and graphics.
