Truthdig Presents: Monsters of Our Own Creation? America's Role in the Mideast
From Islamic State to al-Qaida, Saddam Hussein to Bashar Assad, the last decade and a half has been dominated by turmoil in the Middle East. What role does the United States play in cultivating this chaos?

Will there ever be peace in Jerusalem and Gaza? Is Iran's softening a sign of hope, or an atomic trap? Does the American left have a problem with Islamophobia? Did the Arab Spring fail? Are we still at war in Iraq?

These complex questions, and some of your own, will be tackled by Middle East expert JUAN COLE and longtime foreign affairs journalist LESLIE COCKBURN at a Truthdig discussion event moderated by Editor in Chief ROBERT SCHEER.

6:30 p.m. VIP reception with guest panelists and the Truthdig team.

7:30 p.m. Discussion event begins.

Books will be available for sale at the event by DIESEL.

JUAN R.I. COLE is a Mideast scholar whose widely read Informed Comment blog has helped demystify and report on the region since President George W. Bush went looking for weapons of mass destruction. Cole was a vocal critic of the Iraq War, and his sober, fact-based analysis of Middle Eastern issues continues to bring him national recognition. He is also a Truthdig columnist and the Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. He has written extensively on modern Islamic movements in Egypt, the Persian Gulf and South Asia and has given numerous media interviews on the war on terrorism and the Iraq War. He lived in various parts of the Muslim world for nearly 10 years and continues to travel widely there. He speaks Arabic, Farsi and Urdu. His most recent book is "The New Arabs: How the Millennial Generation Is Changing the Middle East".

LESLIE COCKBURN is a veteran journalist and documentary filmmaker who has covered stories all across the globe, from the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis in 2008 to political instability in nuclear-armed Pakistan. She has produced pieces for "60 Minutes," CBS and PBS, and written several books including "Dangerous Liaison: The Inside Story of the U.S.-Israeli Covert Relationship"; "Out of Control: The Story of the Reagan Administration's Secret War in Nicaragua, the Illegal Arms Pipeline, and the Contra Drug Connection"; and her memoir, "Looking for Trouble: One Woman, Six Wars and a Revolution." She has won numerous awards for her work, including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in 1991. Her most recent book is a work of fiction called "Baghdad Solitaire," a thriller set in post-Hussein Iraq.

Moderator ROBERT SCHEER is Truthdig's editor in chief and has built a reputation for strong social and political writing over more than four decades as a journalist. His columns appear in newspapers across the country, and his in-depth interviews have made headlines, first as managing editor and editor in chief of Ramparts magazine, then as national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, writing on diverse topics such as the Soviet Union, arms control, national politics and the military. In 1993 he launched a nationally syndicated column based at the Los Angeles Times, where he was named a contributing editor. That column ran weekly for the next 12 years and is now based at Truthdig. Scheer can be heard on the current affairs radio program "Left, Right & Center" on Los Angeles public radio station KCRW. He is a clinical professor of communications at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
