For some people, the greatest barrier to writing is a simple inability to sit down and do it. Other people struggle with a back-up and/or blockage of ideasthey know they want to write but they don't know how to begin. In The Writing Workout, Jessica Anya Blau will get you in your seat where you will be led through a series of fast-paced, high-energy writing exercises. Even the most firmly stuck writer will be able to unleash his or her creative forces in this quick, fun, free-thinking class. Exercises can be used by fiction or non-fiction writers, memoirists and poets. Wear comfortable clothes and bring your computer or paper and pen.
The Heart of the Matter with Susan Coll - January 25th, 3:00-5:00PM (http://826dcheartofthematter.bpt.me) Whether you are at the beginning of a project, mired in a sagging middle, or saddled with a lackluster finished manuscript, it can be helpful to go back to where you began and recall the initial inspiration. This workshop will cover a few objectives and strategies as a way to demystifyand even promoteits use. Learn how to embed action and move plot with dialogue, handle dialogue for multiple characters in a scene, and reveal characters swiftly through opposing viewpoints. Magruder's experience writing for the stage will lend itself to a discussion of the complex differences between dialogue in theater and literature: there are advantages, lessons, and connections to be made between the forms.
