Portland Taiko Drummers Benefit for Sunnyside School
TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE AT DOOR OF THE EVENT. $15 - FAMILY $8 - ADULT $5 - STUDENT/SENIOR FREE - KIDS UNDER 5
PORTLAND TAIKO is a premier Pacific Northwest taiko ensemble. Taiko (the Japanese word for drum and the name of the art form) has its roots in ancient Japanese tradition. Today, taiko is a dynamic and evolving performing art combining rhythm, movement, energy, and culture into a single art form (PHOTO COPYRIGHT Rich Iwasaki 2001). Event proceeds to benefit more than 70 8th-graders from Portland's Sunnyside Environmental School who in late May will be attending Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP) for a week on Catalina Island, California. This is an outstanding program that provides students with the opportunity to learn about the unique marine environment of the kelp forest. Experienced staff teach the students to become environmental stewards through exploration, group challenges and sustainability activities. Students are exposed to the plant and animal life first hand through snorkeling and kayaking and lab work. They make connections between their actions and the environment by learning about the history of the island. They participate in organic gardening and composting leading to an understanding of how the plants and animals are interconnected.
