J-Live: One of rap's finest emcees, J-Live debuted in 1996 with his first single, "Longevity" b/w "Braggin' Rights". Since then he has steadily moved forward on fulfilling his lofty goal of getting better every year while also navigating the many roadblocks that the music industry throws at young artists. The EP release, Always Will Be (Fat Beats Records) is entirely self-produced and recorded and is certain to thrill his loyal fans while they await his next full- length album.
J-Live has been exemplifying greatness since his start when he was featured in The Source magazine's "Unsigned Hype" column in the mid 1990's. After firmly establishing himself in the underground community, J signed with London Records and began recording his debut full-length, The Best Part. Due to major label politics the album was seemingly on permanent delay until the label itself was swallowed by corporate consolidation within the music biz. As is the case with many classic recordings that labels allow to slip through the cracks, J-Live's fans found their own means of getting their hands on the never officially released album. It's likely that the word of mouth, fan-to-fan distribution of The Best Part actually added to the young rapper's popularity.
Ever eager to feed his fans new material and passionate about writing and performing, J-Live has been a prolific recording machine ever since his debut. He has independently released numerous 12" singles, made countless guest appearances on other artists' projects, dropped mixed tape gems, and toured the world several times. In between, he's also managed to record a second full-length album, All Of The Above (Coup De'tat Records, 2002) and also independently released the Always Has Been EP (Summer, 2003). Along the way J-Live learned valuable lessons in his struggles while on London and Coup De'tat. One thing is certain, he will never wait for some label or A&R suit to ask him to record. His approach, borne out of necessity, is now a proven success formula testified to by J-Live's longevity in the game and the fact that he has certainly not yet peaked in skills or popularity.
The Always Will Be EP (a bookend follow up to Always Has Been) highlights how very bright the future looks for J-Live. He continues to prove to be a master lyricist with songs that combine heartfelt introspection and old school inspired battle rhymes. This eight song release further demonstrates J-Live's commitment to emcee excellence while also highlighting for other young rappers that there is an alternative path to success in a contemporary rap world dominated by bling bling fi
