Coppelia
Fleming High School Theater Roanoke, VA
The setting is in a European Village in late 1800's. It is a story about a beautiful young girl, Swanilda; her fiance, Franz; the doll-maker, Dr. Coppelius: and the doll, Coppelia. Act I - The scene opens on the market in the evening before Franz and Swanildas wedding day. Coppelia stands in the balcony of mysterious Dr. Coppelius. Franz is mesmerized by Coppelia, not realizing she is a doll. Swanilda, secretly watching Franzs flirtation, begins to doubt his devotion. While the Burgomaster announces a festival and happiness for the town, Swanilda refuses to believe in Franz. The wedding appears to be canceled. Swanilda, determined to see the girl on the balcony, sneaks into the home of Dr. Coppelius accompanied with her friends. Franz, equally determined to satisfy his curiosity about the girl, climbs up to Coppelias balcony on a ladder.
Act II - Swanilda and her friends entering Dr. Coppelius shop. The girlfriends play with life-size dolls. Swanilda discovers that Coppelia is only a doll. Dr. Coppelius rushes into his shop when he realizes somebody has intruded. The girlfriends run out, and Swanilda hides behind the curtain and plots a trick on Dr. Coppelius. Seeing Franz jump out of his window, Dr. Coppelius plots his own scheme with a potion designed to make Franz sleep and bring Coppelia to life. Dr. Coppelius does not realize that the doll he brings out is Swanilda dressed in Coppelias costume. Swanildas act convinces Dr. Coppelius that he has brought his dream doll to life. He orders her to dance, and Swanilda performs several variations. Dr. Coppelius is overwhelmed with his success. Swanilda awakens Franz and shows Dr. Coppelius that Coppelia is still a doll; his dream is collapsed.
Act III - The Burgomaster announces the wedding plans, bringing the town into renewed happiness. Dr. Coppelius interrupts the moment with his troubles. Franz gives Dr. Coppelius a bag of gold in payment of the damages to his home. All rejoice in a final dance.
