RAW ONION: To the Rescue!!
The ranting and raving community voices from the opinion column of The Onion, America's Finest News Source come to life when 19 Philadelphia actors take the stage at LEtage Cabaret on  Sunday, February 28, 2010 to raise funds for The IRC's 2010 season.  RAW ONION will have THREE shows at 6 pm, 8 pm and, you asked for it--  a just-out-of the-fryer 10 pm offering.   The 70-minute show, featuring new material, is a gathering of Philadelphia's liveliest actors bringing to life our favorite opinion columns from The Onion, the weekly satirical newspaper known for its outrageous and absurd humor.  Performers/columnists scheduled to perform in RAW ONION: To the Rescue!! include: Sonja Robson as proudly-inflexible Jane Hendricks in If God Had Wanted Me to be Accepting of Gays He Would Have Given Me the Warmth and Compassion To Do So; Liam Castellan as Elliot Foster, nautical Nazi, in Wave to Everyone Who Passes By Or Get Off My Boat; Michael Dura as Gary Stapleton, efficiency expert in If I Die, Somebody Please Eat This Sandwich; Sharon Geller as Edith Heare, lamenting the state of the union in Somebody Should Do Something About All The Problems, and Bill Rayhill, disgruntled psychiatric ward detainee in This Would be the Best Mental Hospital Ever If Elliot Gould Werent Hiding In the Toilet.  Also scheduled to perform in Raw Onion: To the Rescue!! are Brian Adoff, Michael Harrah, Chris McGovern, Kevin Meehan, Ethan Lipkin, Kirsten Quinn, Kate Black-Regan, David Robson and RJ White.
Proceeds from RAW ONION: To the Rescue!! benefit The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortiums first production of the 2010 season, The Gnadiges Fraulein by Tennessee Williams,  running March 17 through April 3, 2010 at Second Stage at the Adrienne. This rarely-performed work was first published in 1965 in Esquire magazine. Williams coined it a Slapstick Tragedy, akin to vaudeville, burlesque and slapstick with a dash of pop art thrown in.  Surreal, in the spirit of an animated cartoon, many scholars have suggested it represents a trend in Tennessee Williams later years toward the absurdist theatre of Beckett and Ionesco.  This tragic-comic confection features a giant pelican, a drunken fisherman, a Hollywood Indian, two female clowns and a tragic ex-Vaudevillian soubrette in an allegory of human folly, suffering, and endurance that is at once deeply tragic and profoundly comic.

The Gnadiges Fraulein will feature Leah Walton, Kelly Vrooman, Jane Moore, John DAlonzo, Lee Pucklis and Bob Schmidt.  IRC Artistic Director Tina Brock will direct.  The designers on Gnadiges include: Lisi Stoessel, set design; Joshua Schulman, lighting design, and Brian Strachan, costume design.

The Gnadiges Fraulein will be the IRC's eleventh production since the company's formation in 2006.  The IRC celebrated the 100th anniversary of Eugene Ionesco's birth in 2009 by staging well-received productions of his classic plays The Lesson and The Chairs, and has been gaining critical attention by tackling difficult and rarely-produced works by fellow absurdist authors Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and Christopher Durang.

Ltage Cabaret, the intimate 50-seat cabaret located above Beau Monde Creperie at 6th and Bainbridge Streets in Philadelphia will host RAW ONION: To the Rescue!! The benefit show will have two performances on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 6:00 pm, 8:00 pm and 10 pm.   Doors open 30 minutes before curtain. Tickets are $20.00.  Seating is very limited and reservations are recommended by calling 215.285.0472 or purchasing tickets in advance on the IRC website at www.idiopathicridiculopathyconsortium.org.
