La Loca/Red Winter
Pure Carbon is proud to present a double bill of original, physical theatre pieces that tell the stories of two iconic women.

La Loca brings to life the story of Joanna the "Mad", a sixteenth century queen of Spain, who was forcibly confined for the last fifty years of her life. On the day of her death, the phantoms in her mind lead her through her fractured memories, taking on the roles of her family and loved ones, to look back on her life and reign.

Red Winter is sensual, brutal and visceral re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fable told entirely through movement and music. Set in a savage world, Red is recast as the master of her own destiny pushing the story into uncharted territory.

These two pieces were developed through intensive devised rehearsals, being sculpted by the whole ensemble through improvisation and physical exploration. Both productions seek to bring together a combination of stylized movement, arresting visuals, and music into a seamless whole. The shows are linked by their revisionist perspectives on historical narratives, their dark intense styles, and their focus on giving voice to empowered, passionate women fighting against society's oppression.

With this double bill Pure Carbon seeks to push theatrical boundaries and pursue their artistic goals of creating a theatre that supersedes the everyday; a theatre without fear.
