The Bronzeville Nutcracker
Harold Washington Cultural Center Chicago, IL
The Bronzeville Nutcraker is a new twist on a timeless classic. The story chronicles the adventures of young Peggy, a child growing up in Bronzeville Chicago, as she learns to appreciate the importance of family traditions. After Peggy doesnt receive the gift that she wants for Christmas a prince is giving the task of taking her on a journey to magical lands, that will help her to realize that with her imagination the most ordinary gift can turn into the most extraordinary experience. The Prince is there to show her if she opens her mind and imagination she can begin to appreciate the simplest things in life. During their journey she meets Kutie Patootie, Peppermint Patty and the Candy Cane Kids, the Queen of the Nile, Jingle Bell Rockers, Sassy Swingers Swinging Swing, just to name a few. The Last stop on her journey is the Bronzeville Blues District also known as the Black Metropolis, before then blues and jazz was the music she thought only old people listened to. With all the surprises and magical experiences The Prince hopes that their final stop in Bronzeville will help Peggy to see past the gifts and into the true meaning of Christmas. Will Peggy ever come to realize that the most important part about the Holidays is family and tradition and not the gifts?
