FILM SYNOPSIS: Rhythmic Uprising is a documentary that shows how vibrant Afro-Brazilian performing arts are used to fight racism, social exclusion, and poverty in Bahia, Brazil. The film outlines the transformative powers of a large movement of community cultural projects that make up the latest chapter in a creative struggle for racial equality that began four centuries ago. Concepts of citizenship considered in this hour-long film include capoeira, candombl, blocos afros, theater, circus, and quilombos.
BATALA DESCRIPTION: Batala in Washington, DC is an all-women percussion band whose mission is to empower women through drumming and expose people to BrazilÂs dynamic music and culture. Batala is a samba-reggae band inspired by the same movement of drum "blocos" featured in the film Rhythmic Uprising. The heavily syncopated music is rooted in traditional African drumming, and is accented with a heavy dose of Brazilian samba. The women of Batala play this music on 4 types of drums, creating a powerful, dynamic sound that has captivated audiences in the DC area. The music, combined with BatalaÂs colorful costumes and energetic dancing, create a visual and auditory experience that few forget. -----------------------------------------------------------
