Rhythmic Uprising Screening with Batala at the GALA Theater
A rumbling evening of percussive power at the GALA theater. A screening of the newly-launched documentary film Rhythmic Uprising opened by the thunderous beauty of DC-based all-women percussion band Batala. Following the screening, filmmakers Benjamin Watkins, Eliciana Nascimento and Andrew Callard will take the stage with Batala leaders to discuss the role of performing arts in promoting positive social change in our communities.

GALA Hispanic Theater, located at Tivoli Square in Columbia Heights
2437 15th St NW, Washington, DC 20009

This screening is part of our grassroots US distribution initiative that seeks to disseminate the Rhythmic Uprising documentary and generate funds to support the Rhythmic Uprising Media Project. This project continues to arm positive change makers in Bahia with video and computer equipment donations.

FILM SYNOPSIS: Rhythmic Uprising is a documentary that shows how vibrant Afro-Brazilian performing arts are used to fight racism, social exclusion, and poverty in Bahia, Brazil. The film outlines the transformative powers of a large movement of community cultural projects that make up the latest chapter in a creative struggle for racial equality that began four centuries ago. Concepts of citizenship considered in this hour-long film include capoeira, candombl, blocos afros, theater, circus, and quilombos.

BATALA DESCRIPTION:  Batala in Washington, DC is an all-women percussion band whose mission is to empower women through drumming and expose people to Brazil‚s dynamic music and culture. Batala is a samba-reggae band inspired by the same movement of drum "blocos" featured in the film Rhythmic Uprising. The heavily syncopated music is rooted in traditional African drumming, and is accented with a heavy dose of Brazilian samba. The women of Batala play this music on 4 types of drums, creating a powerful, dynamic sound that has captivated audiences in the DC area. The music, combined with Batala‚s colorful costumes and energetic dancing, create a visual and auditory experience that few forget.
