Down and Dirty Dance Series
The Down and Dirty Dance Series at Dance Mission Theater will feature: from New York city, Butoh company Vangeline Theater ( Friday, Saturday, Sunday), Funsch Dance Experience ( Friday and Saturday), and Leyya Tawil's DANCE ELIXIR ( Sunday).
Leyya Tawil's DANCE ELIXIR presents work from their 2009-2010 season entitled Saints/Archangels. Three works from the series-- Grace on a Friday Night, RADAR, and Mercy Starts Now -- were a result of Tawil's international research in aesthetics and identity. For the Down and Dirty Series at Dance Mission Theater, Tawil will present these works along with a preview of You Are Now X, a duet for the angel apparent. This new work is garish, full of lies and decadent details. It will warm you. http://www.danceelixir.org/.
Vangeline Theater: From New York City, the Vangeline Theater will present 3 pieces, all explorations of the feminine principle. The Vangeline Theater is a Dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese Butoh while carrying it into the 21st century. And we are thrilled to come to dance for you in San Francisco! www.vangeline.com.
Funsch Dance Experience: White Girls For Black Power, takes as its starting point two texts: Malcolm X's American Nightmare speech, and Chuck D's Can't Hold Us Back. Both texts are spoken live, in splinters throughout the piece, in deliberately arrhythmic cadences, against a sound score compiled from 1960s all-girl garage bands. A series of solos, duets, trios, and larger group sections splash and bleed together. The central question of this work is: where do black power and feminist agendas coalesce and collide? www.funschdance.org/
