Ear Heart Music: On Structure : Duos and Solos
Natacha Diels, flute
Jessie Marino, cello
On Structure is a sound and movement based performance duo featuring Natacha Diels (flute) and Jessie Marino (cello). This ensemble uses improvised sounds and the fluctuation of these sounds to create moveable art pieces which may invade the realms of the performer, audience or space itself. On Structure looks to question the role of the responsible members of a performance, in order to blur the lines between onlooker and presenter.
Flautist, Natacha Diels and cellist Jessie Marino present a concert of commissioned and classic works from the contemporary repertoire. This concert will be a presentation of works which feature these player both as a duo(On Structure) and as solo performers. Works will include world premieres, pieces written for Super-Flute and Super-Cello, instruments which feature internal amplification and processing systems, as well as works for experimental theater developed by the performers. Works by Andrew Greenwald, Niklas Seidl, Simon Steen Andersen, Anne LeBerge, Helmut Lachenmann ... and more to come!
Flautist and composer Natacha Diels was born in Los Angeles in 1981 and spent most of her childhood in New Mexico. In 2002 she founded the electroacoustic chamber group Ensemble Pamplemousse. In addition to Pamplemousse, Natacha performs in both contemporary classical and improvised contexts, with various ensembles such as On Structure, Tall Brown Boots, and Red Light New Music. She has participated as a performer and composer in new music and art festivals worldwide, including Ostrava Days, Harold Arts, and summer school at STEIM. Natacha maintains a long-standing passion for electroacoustic chamber works, and occasionally composes pieces and builds toys for Pamplemousse. She frequently collaborates with composers to assist in the realization of the electronic component of their compositions, using whatever analog and digital tools are most well-suited for the project. Recent activities include the construction of super-instruments for Pamplemousse and completion of a master's degree at ITP (NYU).
Jessie Marino (b.1984) is a musician who grew up in Long Island, New York. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. In 2006, Jessie was awarded the Stamas Family Scholarship from Lincoln Center and recently has received support from the Strategic Opportunity Stipend (NYFA), the Northern Manhattan Artists Alliance(NoMAA) and the Ora Lerman Charitable Trust. As a cellist Jessie plays regularly with Ensemble Pamplemousse and the Red Light New Music Ensemble (NYC). She has also worked with the SEM Ensemble (NYC), Forum Zeitgenoessicher Musik (Leipzig), KlangExecutiv (Berlin), the Ostravksa Banda (Czech Republic) and with members of the Klangforum Wien (Vienna). Jessie currently resides in New York City where she co-founded the inter-media performance ensembles Tall Brown Boots and On Structure. She feels extremely lucky to be able to collaborate regularly with amazing musicians and artists around the city. Upcoming engagements include a West coast concert tour with Ensemble Pamplemousse in March 2010, and the unveiling of The Lab, an uptown experimental art space, in January, 2010.
