2014 Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival - October 1 (Vanishing Pearls and Oyster Bar)
Come celebrate the launch of the 2014 Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival at the Spirit Bar with Oysters, 100-Mile Pizza, Live Music, and Films. The opening will once again feature a festival tradition a 2-Buck-a-Shuck Oyster Bar. The Spirit Bar will be serving up 100-Mile Pizzas (with GF options) and the Nelson Brewing Company will be offering up a seasonal beer tasting. Live music will be provided by Clinton Swanson & Friends.
Vanishing Pearls (USA, 2014, 81min): Chronicling the 2010 Deep Horizon oil spill, Nailah Jefferson's VANISHING PEARLS shares the untold story of personal and professional devastation in Point á la Hache, a close-knit oyster fishing village on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. Delving into the worst environmental disaster in American history, the filmmaker captures its impact long after the news cameras have left. As 49 million barrels of oil settle in the once vibrant waters, a generations-old community of African American fishermen pledges to fight for justice, accountability and their way of life.
Oyster Harvesting in Bedeque PEI (Canada, 2012, 3min) : Oysters are known to inject passion into your life, but we think it's partially due to the person who plucked it from the waters. There's a man in Prince Edward Island whose passion for oysters has him out at sea at the age of 82 and he'll tell you without skipping a beat that he'd rather be there than anywhere else. The Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters (CCPFH) followed Clifford Bernard this summer on his dory and filmed him as he showed us the ropes.
