Another Kind of Music
In director Jose Gutierrez Razura's third film, we are introduced to the lives of some extraordinarily average characters. Jorge, played by Ruben Padilla, is a young man without motivation. He spends his days lounging around, listening to depressing alternative rock music on his massive set of headphones, halfheartedly attempting to find employment. Joaquin, played by Carlos Hoeflich, is attempting to write a novel about his favorite traditional Mexican singers, romanticizing the past, while ignoring the needs of present girlfriend Adriana (Marisol Padilla). Jorge and Joaquin are neighbors in an apartment complex. Jorge lives with his mother, and Joaquin lives with his girlfriend Adriana. To Joaquin's chagrin, Jorge prefers to hang out with Adriana, who, though a little bit older, is the object of his passive affection. This stylized glimpse into the foundering relationships of Jorge and Joaquin, is hinged together by their varied tastes in music, music that echoes the comparative rhythms of their lives. Jorge is pulled out of his headphone dominated world, and away from his thoughts of Adriana, when he meets Karina (Mely Ortega), a local girl at a restaurant. Jorge's attraction to Karina gives him the motivation to change his routinely lazy behavior, while Joaquin's quest to re-glorify his favorite oldies drives Adriana further away. Though all of these relationships seem doomed from the beginning, they end up impacting each others lives for the better.
