The Chicago Ensemble - 33rd Season Subscription 2009-2010

Known for its "lively, offbeat programming" (John von Rhein, The Chicago Tribune), The Chicago Ensemble offers a intriguing season of beloved chamber music classics, rarely performed gems and exciting new works by contemporary composers, including winners of the Ensemble's Discover America competition for new American chamber works.


The 2009-2010 season includes popular and lesser-known piano quartets, piano trios,  works for voice and ensemble,and an all-woodwind program.

Program I
7:30 pm, Tues., Oct. 6, Fourth Presbyterian Church (Chestnut and Michigan)
3 pm, Sun., Oct. 11, International House at Univ. of Chicago

Piano quartets, including Mozart's unforgettable Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, K. 478, Faure's Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor and Jan Swafford's "They Who Hunger," (1990), a winning composition in one of The Chicago Ensemble's Discover America competitions for new chamber works.


Program II
7:30 pm, Tues., Nov. 24, Fourth Presbyterian Church
3 pm, Sun., Nov. 29, International House at University of Chicago

Piano trios, including Beethoven's light-hearted Trio No. 2 in G Major, Dvorak' Trio No. 3 in F Minor, and Shostakovich's masterful Trio No. 2 (1944).


Program III
3 pm, Sun., Feb. 21, International House at University of Chicago
7:30 pm, Tues., Feb.23: Fourth Presbyterian Church (Chestnut and Michigan)

Works for voice and chamber ensemble, by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Aaron Copland, Albert Roussell, Alban Berg, Felix Mendelssohn, Mtys Seiber and Franz Schubert.


Program IV
3 pm, Sun., March 21, St. Paul and The Redeemer (Hyde Park)
7:30 pm, Tues., March 23, Fourth Presbyterian Church (Chestnut and Delaware)

Works for strings and strings with flute, including Bach's ever-popular Suite No. 2 in B Minor, Schonberg's technically demanding Trio (1945), Martinu's Madrigal Sonata, and Brahms' Quintet in F Minor.


Program V
7 pm, Sun., April 18, International House at University of Chicago (with special pre-concert dinner beginning at 5 pm)
7:30 pm, Tues., April 20, Fourth Presbyterian Church

An eclectic array of works for woodwinds and piano, including Telemann's Trio-Sonata, Mozart's masterful Quintet in Eb Major, Walter Piston 1926 Three Pieces, and Francis Poulenc's Sextet.
