Direct from Spain! Gypsy Flamenco INES BACAN & CONCHA VARGAS with ARTE Y PUREZA
The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership presents an evening of sublimely spontaneous and deeply authentic flamenco puro direct from Spain. Performing in the traditional style rarely seen outside intimate gatherings in the Gypsy neighborhoods of Seville, Ines Bacan, one of Spain's most revered singers, makes her U.S. premier with the stellar flamenco ensemble Arte y Pureza.

We're thrilled to announce that we've just added a surprise guest artist to the upcoming October, 2009 performances by the stellar ensemble Flamenco Arte y Pureza:  Concha Vargas, icon of Flamenco Gypsy Dance.

Directly related to two of the main Gypsy flamenco families of Lebrija, --the Pininis and the Penas--, Concha Vargas and Ines Bacan are cousins who were born in Lebrija and grew up in the heart of the Gypsy community where everyday people would sing and dance flamenco at any opportunity, over household chores, at the corner bar, at a birthday, a wedding, even a wake. Within their community, flamenco was a way of expressing feeling and emotion; a part of everyday family life in which everyone participated. They were seeped in their family's flamenco tradition from a very early age as the older members of her large clan passed on the secret of their art to the younger members of the family who in turn would add their own stamp and identity to the singing and dancing of their inherited cultural legacy.

Hailed by critics as "fierce and triumphant," Arte y Pureza returns to the US after sold-out tours in 2006 and 2007. Led by guitarist Ethan Margolis, the Seville-based company presents the full spectrum of flamenco as art and expression: emotionally passionate and technically powerful. Dancers include Farruquito protege El Oruco, the fiery Cihtli Ocampo and charismatic singer/dancer Javier Heredia, all younger-generation artists who have won high praise both in Spain and internationally.

"Flamenco revisits its family roots. Spain's Arte y Pureza Company performs masterfully." Lewis Segal, Los Angeles Times

"A Conversation in Flamenco, with Intensity and Charisma. A Triumph." Claudia La Rocco, The New York Times

Featured guest artist INES BACAN is one of the finest singers of cante gitano today. She has recorded 4 solo CDS accompanied by guitarists such as Pedro Bacan, Moraito and Antonio Moya, and has appeared as a guest artist on several others. There are 2 documentary films featuring her. Her voice is enriched with the haunting echo of her aunt, la Fernanda de Utrera and with influences from her cousins Miguel Funi and Juan el Lebrijano. She began singing professionally under the wing of her brother, the renowned guitarist Pedro Bacan and is known for her interpretation of the ancient styles of her father Bastian Bacan. She excels in the Gypsy style of tientos-tangos and bulerias-romance demonstrating that the Lebrija style is one of the oldest and most original styles in the history of flamenco. She is joined on her October 2009 U.S. tour for the first time by brother JUAN BACAN, also deeply versed the family's traditions.

CONCHA VARGAS Icon of Flamenco dance, is known for her deeply Gypsy dance style, her ability to improvise within a shared cultural legacy and her spontaneous expression of raw emotion. She has performed all over Europe, Japan and the US for over 25 years and has worked with such flamenco greats as dancers El Guito and Mario Maya, guitarist Pedro Bacan and singers La Macanita and Curro Fernandez. In recent years she has been a featured guest artist with Antonio "El Pipa" and Company performing with them in both the US and Europe.

Jose Manuel "EL ORUCO" was raised with the grandchildren of the great maestro of Gyspy flamenco dance, "El Farruco", inheriting from the Farruco dynasty the force and temperament that characterizes their baile. He continued his training with the great bailaor Sevillano "El Torombo", with whom he now regularly shares the stage. Today he continues to study and perform with his mentor and childhood friend, Juan Manuel Fernandez Montoya, known familiarly to the world as "Farruquito".

JAVIER HEREDIA was born in Seville in 1980. He inherited his talent for flamenco dance and cante from his father and his grandfather. He worked for a few years on the docks in Sevilla until elders of the Gypsy flamenco community discovered his "arte" and encouraged him to become a professional. He has since appeared several times in Seville's prestigious Flamenco Biennial in support of artist such as  Jose Merce, Arcangel, Manuel Molina, El Extremeno, Juana la del Pipa among others. He has toured all over Europe with the legendary dancer Manuela Carrasco. This is his third U.S. tour with "Arte Y Pureza", selling out theaters across the country. He also continues performing as a soloist in important flamenco events internationally such as the Mont de Marsan Flamenco Festival in the south of France.

CIHTLI OCAMPO was born in San Diego, CA. She went to Spain on a  William J. Fulbright Scholarship for Flamenco and Spanish Dance in 1999 and in 2000 she relocated to Seville to train exclusively with the Farruco family. In 2004, Ms. Ocampo began performing with them debuting in Farruquitos production of Alma Vieja. Cihtli has also performed as a soloist with Farruca and Farruco chico in Familia Farruco. She was a featured dancer in Tony Gatlif's film Exils, which won best director at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. In October of 2004 Ms. Ocampo shared billing in Paris with La Macanita and Diego del Morao in Exils the performance. Ms. Ocampo has performed extensively throughout Spain in such venues as the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao, and Los Gallos in Seville. After seeing Cihtli perform, Carmen Amaya's biographer, Mario Bois wrote: "...this girl is truly exceptional...she danced with a man's suit and I was reminded of Carmen Amaya. She is strong and astounding, something you do not see every day."

ETHAN MARGOLIS was born in California in 1978 and comes from an entire family of musicians. Since his arrival in Seville in the year 2000, Margolis has made a name for himself in an intimate world of legendary artists, as he studied and worked with his maestro, Antonio Moya, the famed guitarist from Utrera. Ethan has accompanied many of Spains maestro Gypsy singers including Miguel Funi, Ins Bacn, Curro Fernndez, El Lebrijano and Manuel de Paula. He recently produced and played guitar on Miguel Funi's cd Aires Gitanos. Today, Margolis is one of the few young guitarists who view it as their obligation to study, understand and defend the roots of "cante gitano andaluz" within flamenco. Ethan's accompaniment on the guitar is characterized by an extraordinary awareness of the details within Gypsy singing. His musical background has given him a sensitivity towards music that applies to his playing and his teaching.
