Description
Little Big Band, Swil Kanim, Gene Tagaban, Nicholas Galanin, Philip Charette and other representatives of over seven first nations will take the stage in a powerful presentation of the resurgent spirit in evidence throughout Northwest Native communities today.  These are seasoned performers with over 150 years of combined experience, veterans of many national tours, who combine the best of contemporary rock, rap and jazz with resonances of their traditional culture.  The combination is uplifting, evocative and a stinging rebuke to anyone who believes their culture has faded away.
The Burke is organizing this event, along with our very successful exhibit AYP: Indigenous Voices Reply, as a part of the UWs contribution to the citywide recognition of the 100th anniversary of The Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition. This exhibit presents the replies from sixteen contemporary artists who respond to the way that indigenous peoples were represented in the 1909 fair.  The November 20th performance continues those replies, and will feature several artists who are represented in the exhibit.
