My Fellow Americans
Hamlin Park Studio Theater Chicago, IL
Peter Carpenter has dedicated the majority of his career to tracking the complex ways in which identity has been shaped in subaltern communities by HIV/AIDS and the choice of Reagan as the subject for an evening-length work continues this investigation in an overtly civic vein. Rather than relying on Reagan and the 1980s solely for source material however, the dance resists dry rhetoric through imagistic juxtapositions; virtuosic performances by Carpenter, Lisa Gonzales, Suzy Grant, Atalee Judy and Donnell Williams; humor; and a shifting relationship to historical and perceived time. Through assembling an unlikely coalition of bodies with regard to race, gender and sexual identity, Carpenter attempts to vivify the discrepancy between the America that Reagan spoke of and made policy for, and the America for whom such rhetoric and policies failed.
