"Geek Week" at the Tank presents... SCHAFFER & THE DARKLORDS and SHAEL RILEY
Schaffer & the Darklords Schaffer the Darklord (or STD) is a New York City-based rapper and comedian with subversive material best-suited for brainy and/or decadent audiences. With manic energy, verbose vocabulary and cartoonishly commanding stage presence, STD skewers such topics as religious zombies, sci-fi sex fantasies, grammar snobbery and obsessive cat-enthusiasts. Imagine a Frankenstein-esque monster assembled from equal parts Bill Hicks, Eminem, Prince, Ozzy Osbourne and Darth Vader, stitched together inside the shell of a maniacal heavy metal ex-patriot. His work has landed him nods in Wired, Blender and Time Magazine as well as an appearance in the documentary feature "Nerdcore Rising." His first two full-length albums have been treated to steady sales, glowing reviews and second pressings, and his music video for "The Rappist" has garnered a half million hits on Youtube. Constant touring has landed him on bills with the likes of MC Chris, MC Frontalot, MC Lars, Grand Buffet and Eugene Mirman. When not on the road, STD moonlights as a guest-host for countless burlesque, comedy and variety events around NYC. Now backed by a live 5-piece ensemble of unholy miscreants collectively known as the Darklords, STD's live show boasts even more metal and madness than ever. In tandem with Seattle-based rapper Beefy, he fronts the nerdcore hip-hop virtual band The Grammar Club, and his new project Shael Riley & The Double Ice Backfire features his vocal and chiptune work layered over grunge-influenced guitar, drums and bass. Drawing on years of experience as a video-game music remixer with OverClocked ReMix and indie pop sensibilities, Shael melds the lo-fi bleeps and bloops of video-game-inspired electronica with soulful, hard-edged pop-rock. His work has been featured in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and the feature-length documentaries Nerdcore for Life and Nerdcore Rising.
