Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry)
The opera depicts life in a Sicilian village where love, betrayal and honor are all on display. The action takes place on Easter Sunday - the mood is set with a chorus and an Easter hymn and the opera is punctuatued by the famous orchestral "Intermezzo". The story concerns Turiddu, a young villager, returned from military service to find that while he was gone, his fiancee, Lola, has married Alfio, the prosperous village carter. In revenge, Turiddu seduces Santuzza, a young woman in the village. As the opera begins, Lola, overcome by her jealousy of Santuzza, has begun an adulterous affair with Turiddu. The dramatic events which result demonstrate the rustic chivalry of the title.
