THE UNDERPANTS
Using Carl Sternheim's 1910 comedy, Steve Martin has reinvigorated a hilarious laugh-out-loud farce, THE UNDERPANTS. A puritanical bureaucrat, Theo, berates his young wife, Louise, for allowing her underpants to fall at a parade for the king. He is sure he will lose his job, be financially ruined and become a social outcast. Soon, besotted men appear at his door to rent a room, unnoticed by Theo, to seduce his wife. The play erupts with supposed scandal as gender roles are questioned, even reversed, with word play and masterful banter, as only Steve Martin can portray in an adaptation as relevant today as Sternheim's play was a century ago.
