Seattle / Mainstreet Festival of New Musicals
Mainstreet Musicals, a New York based organization, has enlisted the help of affiliates in twelve cities to create regional festivals that present three brand new musicals that have been carefully selected by Mainstreet's Guest Artistic Director, John Lithgow:
Merton of the Movies (Doug Katsaros & Donald Brenner), Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (Lindsay Warren Baker & Amanda Jacobs), and Under Fire (Barry Harman & Grant Sturiale); will each have two performances throughout the 6-day festival.
Billie Wildrick, Seattle's affiliate, has added three Late-Night 'Feed-the-Artist' Trivia Cabarets that weave performances from festival actors in with theatre-sourced pub trivia, and an evening of interactive pitch sessions for fresh, up-and-coming musicals And to top off the festival, a concert to end all concerts. Seattle's Best performing pieces written by Seattle composers, with Best of the Fest awards given throughout the evening.
MERTON OF THE MOVIES A naive store clerk arrives in Hollywood during the rollicking era of silent movies determined to be a serious dramatic actor. But an ambitious starlet and a conniving director hoodwink the lad into unwittingly becoming the newest Comedy Box Office Sensation!
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE In this musical adaptation, the love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy comes to life when Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra revisit "First impressions", an earlier version of the beloved novel. As Austen makes changes, the Austen sisters must learn to see both the story and each other in a new light.
UNDER FIRE Based on the political thriller of the same name starring Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy, the musical takes place in the late 1970's in Central America and concerns the difficult choices journalists of integrity face when covering the insanities of wartime.
