Paramapara: Indian Classical Kathak and Sarod Concert
Parampara: Kathak and Sarod Concert. Upcoming kathak dancer Archana Kumar and upcoming sarodist Brandon McIntosh will give an indepth performance of Hindustani classical music and dance accompanied by singer Arijit Mahalanabis, harmonium player Mausam, and tabla players Manoj Biswas and Sri Kuntal Roy. Archana and Brandon are the directors of the Upcoming South Asian Performing Arts Festival: Utsav.
Archana Kumar has been understanding dance for nearly 16 years & still continuing, her background starts with Indian Classical Dance, trained in Baratanatyam (South Indian) for 7 years & then Kathak (North Indian) since 1996 at Natya Institute of Kathak & Choreography, Bangalore, India. She was part of STEM Contemporary Dance (Bangalore India), touring nationally & performed at the prestigious festival - Vasantahabba. Moving to Seattle in allowed her to explore deeper on the techniques of modern dance & improvisation. She has worked with talented choreographers of Seattle such as Amy Neal, Cyrus Khambatta & Karn JunkinSmith. Summer she formed the Manasarovar Kathak for beginners of all ages & backgrounds. She has conducted several 101 classes & lecture demos in Seattle colleges & schools AND at the Bangalore University as a visiting artist on Kathak, beginning Modern Dance & Yoga. She holds a B.S. in Biology & Psychology. She is currently the Dance Wing lead of local Indian Association-PRATIDHWANI.
Brandon McIntosh has been studying sarod with Seattle based Dhrupadiya Jeff Lewis since 1998. From 2001 to 2003, after completing a degree in Music from Central Washington University, he moved to Kolkata, India, to begin studies with Sarod maestro Buddhadev Dasgupta of the Senia-Shahajahanpur Gharana.ÃâàIn 2005 he completed a Masters degree in music composition at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Brandon has been recognized with numerous awards and fellowships for his work in music, and has performed and collaborated extensively with organizations in Kolkata. He regularly travels to Kolkata to study under Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta and recently has been accepted as a student at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, India. He has had the honor to perform alongside kathak dancer Sujata Banerjee, druphad singer Arijit Mahalanabis, and tabla player Yogesh Samsi.
Kuntal Roy is an up and coming Tabla player based in Kolkata, India. Kuntal was initiated into tabla by Sri Narayan Chandra Halder at a very early age. He continued his studies with Sri Radha Raman Nath, a student of Pt. Anindo Chatterjee from 1984. Kuntal has been a disciple of Pt. Shankar Ghosh since 1991. He also frequently receives talim from Sri Vikram Ghosh on Tala Layakari and concept of South Indian Rhythm. Kuntal has given both solo and accompanying performances as well as tabla workshops in India.
