WHEN THE SUN COMES OUT - Toronto Concert Premiere
Billed as Canada's first lesbian opera, WHEN THE SUN COMES OUT, comes to Toronto for only two concert version performances during World Pride Toronto this June 26 & 27, 2014.
Teiya Kasahara, who premiered the role of Solana is joined by Stephanie Yelovich, soprano to play the role of Lilah and Keith Lam, baritone to play the role of Javan. Maika'i Nash will take the musical helm at the piano.
Composer Leslie Uyeda has been hailed for writing "gracefully for the voice, placing melodious emotional statements in the center of a range...Beautiful voices sound beautiful when singing Uyeda's music con fuoco." - John Yohalem from Parterre Box.
This groundbreaking new work is a story of forbidden love, divided loyalties and culture clash, the opera explores the oppression that queers face, and the risks they take, in nations where homosexuality is illegal. This piece was greeted with a standing ovation at last year's sold-out world premiere performance commissioned by the Queer Arts Festival in Vancouver and at the sold-out workshop performance the previous year.
Set in an imaginary country called Fundamentalia, a country where violation of gender roles is punishable by death, When the Sun Comes Out is the story of a love affair between two women, Lilah, a young, sheltered and wealthy married mother, and Solana, a gender outlaw and rebellious outsider just passing through as she's passed through so many other countries in her restless, futile quest for happiness. In a land where love between women is punishable by death, Lilah and Solana fall in love but their affair is discovered by Lilah's enraged and unpredictable husband, Javan.
