Transportation for the Masses or the Gentrification of Mass Transit?
Out of the shadows of decades of land use and housing rights battles there is an emerging movement for transportation justice that's reshaping the transportation debate and winning real victories for low income people, riders of color, and transit dependent populations.

In the current "Gilded Age" of the Bay Area economy, public investment in mass transit is facilitating much of San Francisco and the region's private housing development, land use speculation, and related economic development underway in the Bay Area economic "boom."

As San Francisco considers $1.5 billion in transit funding measures on this November 2014 ballot, prepare for the ballot debates with this UrbanIDEA panel. Speakers include representatives from People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), Chinatown Community Development Center, Senior & Disability Action, and Urban Habitat, with moderator Mario Yedidia of SF Rising, to discuss:

1) The emerging San Francisco Transportation Justice movement, recent victories (Free MUNI for Youth), the Senior/Disabled Riders campaign, and new campaigns.

2) The influence of state/regional policy, funding, and institutions on San Francisco's transportation system.

3) How Transportation and Housing advocates and organizers can work together to build a strong and united equitable development coalition.
