Billy Hart Quartet
JazzFresno is pleased to present the Billy Hart Quartet on Tuesday, June 17 as part of Milestones Summer Jazz Concert Series. Also in the series is the Bob Mintzer Quartet on Wednesday, June 18. Add a ticket to the Mintzer concert and save a few bucks. (Tickets for the Mintzer concert only are available at http://bpt.me/641834).

The Billy Hart Quartet is:
William W. "Jabali" Hart, drums
Mark Turner, tenor saxophone
Ethan Iverson, piano
Ben Street, bass

Billy Hart has played and recorded with the Montgomery Brothers (1961), Jimmy Smith (1964-66), Wes Montgomery (1966-68), Herbie Hancock's sextet (1969-73), McCoy Tyner (1973-74), Stan Getz (1974-77), and Quest (1980s), in addition to extensive freelance playing (including recording with Miles Davis on 1972's On the Corner).

The Billy Hart Quartet has been performing since 2003, mostly in New York at the Village Vanguard, the Jazz Standard, Fat Cat, Dizzy's, and Birdland.

According to pianist Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus): "The first week it was billed as "The Ethan Iverson/Mark Turner quartet." But after Billy asked it to be his band for a night for a gig in New Jersey, the other members unanimously voted to give it him permanently. There has never been any doubt that the right name was on the bill:  At every gig, fans and musicians from all over the world come out to support a drummer who has engendered so much love and respect during so many years of touring, teaching, and living."

LATEST ALBUM: ONE IS THE OTHER
The second ECM album by the Billy Hart Quartet is a major musical statement, and one of the outstanding jazz albums of the season. The group's reach, already broad on 2011's widely-acclaimed "All Our Reasons," is yet more expansive here. Strong compositions - by leader-drummer Hart, tenorist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson  reflect upon a wide swath of the music's history, and are distinguished by vivid and imaginative solos and wonderful interplay. A basic premise, that this should be a band in which the vastly-experienced Billy Hart gets to play everything he wants to play, has led to a sense of almost unlimited possibility for all participants. There is freedom and joy in this music, and tenderness, too, not least in the set's sole standard, a beautifully played version of "Some Enchanted Evening." Recorded in New York in 2013, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Don't miss an amazing evening of jazz in an intimate 350-seat theater.

Tickets are also available through event sponsor American Music Company at 2597 E. Ashlan, Fresno.
