Girl Rising Film Screening

About the film

Educating girls can break cycles of poverty in just one generation. Yet, millions of girls around the world face barriers to education that boys do not. Removing barriers such as early marriage, gender-based violence, domestic slavery and sex trafficking means not only a better life for girls, but a safer, healthier and more prosperous world for all.

From Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising, spotlights the unforgettable stories of nine girls living in the developing world, striving beyond circumstance and overcoming nearly insurmountable odds to achieve their dreams. The narration talents of renowned actors, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez, and the moving words of prize-winning authors combine and give voice to the girls' stories and this powerful truth: educating girls can transform families, communities, countries and eventually, the world.

Girl Rising, is more than just a feature film. It is also a campaign and a community that believes investing in girls will bring about transformative change  for families, communities and nations. Using the power of storytelling and film, "Girl Rising" is designed to spread the message that investing in girls benefits everyone.

About the charities

Richmond's  Touchstone Family Association, offers many programs in support of local families and youth, including Girl Zone. Girl Zone is a support group for adolescent girls between the ages of 13 and 15 (or in Grades 8 and 9), and is offered in partnership with the City of Richmond.

This experiential group, focuses on activities such as rock-climbing, yoga and relaxation, and creative art. It also addresses topics pertinent to young women, such as societal expectations, roles/norms, and peer and relationship issues.

Through participating in these exercises, the goal is to help these girls increase their self-esteem, their concept of their body image, socialisation skills, and self-care techniques.Visit Touchstone Family's website.

Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl initiative is a national campaign that is unleashing the power of Canadian girls, women  and everyone who matters to them  to claim a brighter, safer future for girls in the developing world.

When a girl is educated, nourished and protected, she shares her knowledge and skills with her family and community, and can forever change the future of a nation. It's that powerful!

That's what Because I am a Girl is all about  harnessing the incredible power that girls and women have here at home and in the developing world, to change the future. Visit Because I am a Girl's website.
