A Walk-Through Concert in the historic Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, CA

Directed by Diana Stork

Join over 40 harpists and their unique ensembles and styles of harp music in the Festival of Harps 20th Anniversary Celebration.  This walk-through concert at the Chapel of the Chimes, one of the wonders of Bay Area architecture, was inspired by the Garden of Memory Solstice concert, which attracts thousands annually.  The Chapel was originally designed by Julia Morgan, who also designed the Hearst Castle at San Simeon and many other classic California buildings.  It contains over a hundred rooms and corners decorated in a style evocative of gothic cathedrals, and each of these rooms makes a perfect location for a small intimate concert.  The audience walks from room to room through marble statues, flowers, and walls decorated with stone carvings, mosaics, and bronze plaques. They follow a map of the different rooms and floors of the building to locate whatever harp music they wish to hear next--Celtic, Renaissance, African, Latin, Scandinavian, Asian, Medieval, Classical, Jazz, Modern.  Faint echoings of the other harp music whisper in the background as you listen to the concert being performed before you, because each musical group will do a full concert at its particular location.  Who you wish to see, and when you wish to hear them, will be up to you.

Featuring:

Note: Thank-you for purchasing a ticket to the upcoming 20th Anniversary Festival of Harps "Celebration of World Harp Music". The walk-through concert area, comprising over 100 rooms, has some chairs and benches; but seating is limited. We recommend wearing good walking shoes; and be prepared to stand and listen when you find a harp group you love, or even sit on the floor. You might want to bring a fold-up chair or pillow if you'd like a guaranteed soft place to sit. We will have concerts going on in the Chapels' two halls on the lower level there's seating there for about 500 people.
