Left Coast Chamber Ensemble 2: Fugues, Fantasy and New Companions
Green Room, San Francisco War Memorial Building San Francisco, CA
Fugues, Fantasy, and New Companions Beethoven's Grosse Fuge shocked audiences with its intense compact expression and many surprises when it was premiered in 1825 during the composer's last years. Phantasy Quartet, composed by a 19-year-old Benjamin Britten in 1932, still holds a position as one of the most important pieces for oboe quartet. As companion pieces to these two influential masterpieces, Left Coast has commissioned new quartets from American composers Melinda Wagner, Kristin Kuster and Sam Nichols.
