| Description |
Zai Circle Zai- in Chinese means: to exist.-Circle: is the continuation-the complete, whole. It is also literally the act of playing together in a circle-to continually change, collaborate, and shift with the musicians in the circle.
Zai Circle is a group of interconnected and ever changing musicians from all over the world who perform musical dialogues for a higher purpose that can be a bridge to the cultural divide. We "converse" on a profound theme of generating understanding of the diverse cultures engaged in the dialogue. The goal is not to force change in these cultures but rather to learn, and appreciate what we all bring to the equation and to collaborate with each other to create something new and through this musical collaboration encourage cultural peace.
The mission statement of Zai Circle is:
Connect people and cultures; universally, and passionately, with a task of building music, art, and creativity, for a higher purpose: encouraging peace, harmony and knowledge through music and collaboration, bridging the cultural divide and perpetuating diverse cultural awareness.
Zai Circle #2 guidelines: Objective: to host a conversation, (listening and musical response), with 4-6 musicians from diverse backgrounds and cultures to gain an understanding and appreciation of each musicianfs craft, influences, developmental path, and culture.
Format: Circle of players. Facilitator.
Each musician plays a solo piece of their choice, (either an original idea or a traditional or influential selection), It should represent something that outlines a traditional cultural precedent or, be one that has been influential in the development of that musicians musical direction and backgrounds and cultural beliefs.
The Facilitator then asks or chooses two musicians of the circle to respond musically with an improvisation inspired by the solo piece. After each player in the circle has been able to state a theme and hear a response, the final improvisation/composition will be in bringing all of the musicians together to collaborate and perform collectively. By hearing the circle a few players at a time a genuine understanding and appreciation will have developed between all the players.
Host: KeLan (Matthew Kirschenbaum): (electric basses and guitars) Guests: Yuval Ron:-Oud. Li Bo: -Morin Huur (Mongolian Horse Head Fiddle) Bill Corral:-electric guitars, Mandola. others TBA.
