ABOUT SPW: SPW is recommended for performers of all disciplines, including actors, writers, comedians, spoken word artists, musicians and dancers. All levels of experience are welcome, from those who have never been on stage before to those preparing a piece for a professional production or audition.
SPW, founded by W. Kamau Bell and Bruce Pachtman in 2005 and now under the direction of Martha Rynberg, has proudly graduated dozens (and dozens!) of artists who have performed all over the Bay Area - WordsFirst, the Marsh, Tell it On Tuesday, Solo Sundays, City Solo and the SF Theater Festival. Members have also been featured in Los Angeles and New York at The New York International Fringe Theater Festival, Midtown International Theater Festival, and the Comedy Central Stage.
ABOUT MARTHA RYNBERG (Teacher & Director): MARTHA RYNBERG collaborates with performance artists to find the story in personal histories and social/political movements. Her directorial debut was the internationally acclaimed W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour, and the basis for FX television series, Totally Biased. Martha works with performers all over the country. She is also a founding member of Mixed, Blend & Whole, a queer multidisciplinary and multicultural performance collaborative. Martha's own work, Lady Parts, explores the dark and hilarious corners of inheritance, parenting, and internalized misogyny. Really, it's funny.
