Those Vanished Hands
THOSE VANISHED HANDS is a concert by Australian flutist Janet McKay featuring compelling new works by emerging Australian and American composers. The program also features NY flutist Jessica Schmitz. THOSE VANISHED HANDS is the latest in an ongoing series of concerts formulated and performed by Janet McKay. These concerts are presented under the auspices of Random Overtones, a newly-formed organization dedicated to the performance, presentation and development of new music in both Australia and the USA.
THOSE VANISHED HANDS highlights McKays ongoing passion for collaboration. Each piece in the program has been generated through intensive workshopping and communication with the composers, including residency periods at Bang on a Can in 2006, the Bundanon Trust in early 2009 and at the Queensland Conservatorium in 2008.
Janet McKay actively seeks out unusual or unconventional venues for each of her projects. Recent performances have taken place in a disused cinema, a converted army shed, and a disused railway maintenance shed. Her Australian and US performance series in 2009 will focus on contemporary gallery spaces, including the Qld Centre of Photography and Metro Arts (Brisbane), Meridian Gallery (visual and performing art space, San Francisco), the wulf. (grassroots loft space, Los Angeles), and The Tank (urban gallery, New York City).
