Lysistrata
Buriel Clay Theatre San Francisco, CA
A women's strike for peace using the most powerful weapon in the feminine arsenal forms the core of Aristophanes' Lysistrata. One of the sexiest political farces ever written, Lysistrata was first performed in 411 B.C. when Athens and Sparta were engaged in a bloody war with no end in sight.
Under the leadership of the determined Lysistrata, the women of the warring city-states unite in refusing their husbands any sexual favors until all arms are laid aside. The resulting male dismay and counterattack, the women's' valiant defense of their temporary virtue, and the final victory of the female cause represent a sexual comedy without peer in the history of theatre - as well as the fantasy that gives eloquent expression to its author's dream of salvation for his war ravaged city.
