Topdog/Underdog, A Staged Reading
Topdog/Underdog is a hard-hitting hip-hop-journey of dizzying verbal virtuosity. Three card monte is the name of the game, and Lincoln is the master. His brother, Booth, an eager wannabe, can't understand why Lincoln would give up the excitement of the hustle to put on white-face and play a dead president at a shabby arcade. In the cramped single room they share, the brothers race headlong toward an historical blow-up. Their harsh and profane street lingo becomes poetry in the hands of 2002 Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks.
SuzanLori Parks, a young word wizard who won the genius award from the MacArthur Foundation when she was a mere 22 years old. She has already authored a number of striking plays riffing on American history and the AfricanAmerican's place in it. Named one of TIME magazine's "100 Innovators for the Next New Wave," Suzan-Lori Parks is one of the most exciting and acclaimed playwrights in American drama today. Parks will be in Buffalo on March 11 as part of Just Buffalo Literary Center's Babel Series, the signature award winning lecture series.
