The Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia 2013-2014 Performing Arts Series joins with Adas Israel Congregation, Theater J, and "Love and Religion, an Interfaith Workshop" to present a reading of the play "Love, Faith and Other Dirty Words."
The play is a funny, moving story of interfaith couples negotiating to maintain the balance between devotion to each other, and devotion to their separate faiths. Drawn from interviews with 26 Boston-area interfaith couples, the play follows the trail of attraction, love, conflict and compromise as couples navigate courting, marriage, and raising children not to mention food and the prospect of a Christmas tree! Six actors play multiple roleshusbands and wives, parents and clergyin a kaleidoscope of pairings that reveal the complexities of modern faith and romance: Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Muslim and Atheist.
The play was written by Kent Stephens, founding Artistic Director of Harbor Light Stage in Kittery Point, Maine, and was developed by the New Center for NOW in Boston with support from the Jim Joseph Foundation. Six local professional actors will be directed by Shirley Serotsky, Associate Artistic Director of the DCJCC's Theater J. The reading will be followed by an audience discussion led by Dr. Marion Usher of "Love and Religion, an Interfaith Workshop."
This one-of-a-kind cultural exploration of this important Jewish conversation will be held at the JCCNV. Admission is free; there will be an opportunity for audience members to make a donation at the end of the evening.
