Runa/Niamh Ní Charra
One of the goals of the Burren Series is to help introduce and develop new and emerging artists in trad music. While certainly not new, these two groups are have not played the series before and are lesser known perhaps in Boston that elsewhere in the world. This makes for an ideal evening of discovery and entertainment.
Runa: Led by the vocals of Shannon Lambert Ryan, Runa draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Their pure trad approach as well as a fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States, gives this vocal and instrumental ensemble and its arrangements of traditional songs and tunes a fresh sound.
Niamh Ni Charra: I first saw Niamh perform at the prestigious Lowell Folk Festiva a few years ago and for a number of years wanted to see and hear more of her live. A dynamic performer, a great singer, fiddler, and concertina player, she is a credit to her Kerry and Sliabh Luachra background and will both complement and contrast with the other group on this bill, Runa. Who knows; in the spirit of the Backroom Series, there might be some collaborations!
The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world. It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
