Ronald Perera: Why I Wake Early & Other American Music
The New England Classical Singers will perform Ronald Perera's "Why I Wake Early", a setting of eight poems by Mary Oliver.
The concert will also feature other samples of American choral music under the theme of "Songs of Love and Nature." Pieces include "The Boatman's Dance", "The Little Horses", "At the River", and "The Promise of Living" from "The Tender Land" by Aaron Copland; "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" by Harry T. Burleigh; selections from "The Hour Glass" by Irving Fine; "Take Five" by Paul Desmond; "Georgia on My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael; and "Blue Skies" by Irving Berlin.
The composer of "Why I Wake Early", Ronald Perera, will give a pre-concert lecture about the music at 6:30. The concert will begin at 7:30.
