Bukharan Jewish Folk Ensemble
A riveting blend of Central Asian, Sephardic Jewish and Arab elements, Bukharan Jewish music reflects a community with roots in Central Asia going back to the seventh century BCE. Born in 1938 in Uzbekistan, and now based in Queens, NY, ensemble leader Cantor Izra Malakov is a descendent of a long line of rabbis. He has devoted his life to preserving Bukharan Jewish music, and recently published Musical Treasures of the Bukharan Jewish Community.
