Bukharan Jewish Folk Ensemble
A riveting blend of Central Asian, Sephardic Jewish and Arab elements, Bukharan Jewish music reflects a community with roots in Central Asia going back to the seventh century BCE. Dont miss this rare opportunity to hear the leading proponents of an ancient musical tradition saturated with unique rhythms and entrancing tone colors.
Born in 1938 in Uzbekistan, and now based in Queens, NY, ensemble leader Cantor Izra Malakov is a descendent of a long line of rabbis. He has devoted his life to preserving Bukharan Jewish music, and recently published Musical Treasures of the Bukharan Jewish Community.
