DARK RIVER: THE FANNIE LOU HAMER STORY
WomenArts is proudly partnering with the Mount Holyoke Symphony Orchestra to present the East Coast Premiere of Dark River: The Fannie Lou Hamer Story, a civil rights opera by Mary Watkins.

ABOUT FANNIE LOU HAMER

Fannie Lou Hamer, the daughter of share-croppers, was one of the first African-Americans to register to vote in Mississippi.  She became a civil rights leader in the 1960s and endured death threats, beatings, and imprisonment in order to obtain voting rights for her people.

Fannie Lou Hamer's struggle is a story that demands the grand scale of opera, and Dark River: The Fannie Lou Hamer Story is a unique blend of classical, gospel, blues, and jazz styles that suits the story perfectly.

COMPOSER - MARY D. WATKINS

Trained in classical music at Howard University, composer Mary D. Watkins has written for symphony orchestras, chamber and jazz ensembles, film, theatre, and choral groups.  Her recent recordings include Prayer for Peace and Recorded Music of the African Diaspora.
