Jewish Theater Collaborative, Oregon Jewish Museum and German American Society jointly present:
Charlotte Salomon: Life? Or Theater? A Multi-Media Performance Play with Songs Produced and directed by Sacha Reich
Portlands Jewish Theater Collaborative, co-sponsored by the Oregon Jewish Museum and the German American Society, invites you to an unusual theatrical experience a staging of a 1930s graphic novel by an expressionist German painter, Charlotte Salomon, set to music. Salomons work depicts her biographical struggle as a Jewish artist and a woman in love against the historical backdrop of the rise of the Third Reich.
Sacha Reich, JTCs director, brings the story to life on the stage, using projections of Salomons paintings, installations and live and recorded music as the fabric from which the story unfolds. Reich and her dynamic design team of Peter West, Rody Ortega and Mark Loring, present among others, Drammy award winning actor Michele Mariana and Cantor Ida Rae Cahana. The music ranges from classical pieces like Schuberts Lieder (selected as inspirations by Salomon herself at the time of her painting) to modern chansons composed especially for this occasion.
