Amahl and the Night Visitors
Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera in one act by Gian Carlo Menotti, who also wrote the original English libretto, was first performed on 24 December 1951 in New York City, at the NBC studios, where it was broadcast on television as the debut production of the Hallmark Hall of Fame. The opera is now a popular Christmas classic.
The story tells the tale of Amahl, a crippled boy who, although he has a kind and pleasant heart, has a problem with telling tall tales and, occasionally, lies. One evening, after sitting outside playing his shepherd's pipe, he tells his mother that there is an amazing star "as big as a window" outside - a tall tale which she does not believe! Later that night, while Amahl's Mother weeps for her son, praying he not become a beggar, there is a knock at the door. Amahl is amazed when he sees three splendidly dressed kings, who say that they are on a long journey to give gifts to a wondrous child, and that they would like to rest at Amahl's house. Amahl goes to fetch all the surrounding neighbors. However, later, while the Kings are resting, the mother, poor and afraid of the prospect of her child becoming a beggar, attempts to steal some gold that was meant for the Christ child. When the kings's page catches her in the act, confusion results. What will happen to Amahl and his poor mother? Amahl and the Night Visitors has the answer!!
