Piano Series with Derek Herzer
23-year-old Michigan native Derek Herzer makes his Franco Center debut only 6 short years after he began to play the piano! He discovered his gift for keyboard performance only at age 17 and went on to study piano at Western Michigan University. Upon moving to Maine two years ago to pursue his graduate study with Laura Kargul at University of Southern Maine, he continued to amaze audiences with his artistry.
In a June 2012 newspaper review of a performance by the Oratorio Chorale, for whom Derek performs as accompanist, Portland Press Herald classical music reviewer Christopher Hyde wrote, "As a pianist, I have to express my delight at the playing of accompanist Derek Herzer, who can do everything, including Lisztian pyrotechnics, with style and grace. His solo of Skazka, Op. 35, No. 4 by Nikolai Medtnerwas striking in itself. Its performance on a well-tuned Yamaha upright was little short of incredible."
Please check this page as we get closer to the concert for a description of the specific program that Mr. Herzer will be performing.
