An Evening of One-Acts
SAVE ME A PLACE AT FOREST LAWN, a comedy, was successfully produced Off-Broadway in 1963. Two widowers, tired, lonely, and weary of it all, meet daily at the cafeteria to discuss their grandchildren, recall their earlier life and contemplate death which lurks just outside their door. In this ALA Production, Clara will be played by ELIZABETH GARRARD & Gertrude, by KITT MARSH. Life's resignation from these two is touched with wisdom and humor. When one of the ladies reveals that she had an affair with the other's husband many years before, her friend concedes very casually that she had known about it all along. The playwright respects the dignity of the human condition and manages to avoid being grossly sentimental. "It is written simply, touchingly and with considerable humor." NY Post
On the same bill is THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, an Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of the "forbidden zone." A landmark play of the late 20th Century, it heralded in the second wave of feminism, partly because of a good-natured but also seriously evangelical mission about how women view their bodies. It is brilliant comedy that effectively got the word out Off-Broadway in 1996. VALERIE HELLER plays the role at ALA, which was originated by playwright Eve Ensler herself - a feminist happy to have found a man who "liked to look at it." "Outrageously funny, emotionally affecting, and occasionally angry, the play confronts words to demystify and disarm them. Ensler disarms the audience too." Associated Press
