10th New York Turkish Film Festival - Beyaz Melek / White Angel
DEBUT FILMS

SYNOPSIS
Beyaz Melek (White Angel) is about the universal drama of old age. Mala Ahmet, the elderly leader of a tribe, suffers from cancer. While running away from the hospital to avoid chemotherapy and two sons on his trail, he suddenly finds himself in a nursing home where he is confronted by a different kind of life and culture. Here, the elderly are left alone to fend for themselves as they wait for their turn to die, whereas the seniors in Mala Ahmets village are treated with the utmost care and respect by their relatives. Mala Ahmet, decides to invite this group of abandoned people to his village with the purpose of giving them some special attention at the end of their lives. Their journey turns into an adventure into the heart of the country and its people.

FROM THE PRESS

...Kirmizigul not only questions how we treat our elderly, but also strikes a comparison between the "Istanbul aristocracy" and the tribal culture in the East. (...) The film finds its own pace in a short while and invites the audience to listen to a symphony of sadness. Some scenes are so successful that we forgive and forget the not-so-successful aspects of the film. The scene where Yildiz Kenter covers the brothers sleeping in the garden with a blanket, the bright wedding festivities on the Tigris River, and the two death scenes are unforgettable and make the film worth watching. The score is beautiful although a bit overdone, and the cast is stellar. Who knows when we will see these stars together in a film again? Watching their performances has been a pleasure. In short, Kirmizigul does a good job with his directorial debut. Forget about all the critical writings including mine and go see this film!
