The Flesh Hungry Dog Show
On Friday, September 5th, 2008 , The Flesh Hungry Dog Show gaily continues its unorthodox mission to be the best live rock and variety show for queers and friends in Chicago, and perhaps, the universe. For the September show, the FHD Show trades in its straight leg jeans and high top sneakers for a pair of cowboy boots and a 10 gallon hat as it goes COUNTRY! Featured bands on the newly installed stage (sponsored by our friends at STEAMWORKS) are Devin and the Straights, The Honeybees, and Civil Servant. Hosted by Chicago rock impresario Gary Airedale, the show will also feature Bag of Fun prize giveaways from The Pleasure Chest, groovy movies, special guest performers Ms. Bea Haven of Girlie-Q Live, Red Hot Annie, and DJ Sky.
The Flesh Hungry Dog Show starts at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5th, 2008 at Jackhammer (773-743-5772), 6406 N. Clark St. in Chicago. Time Out Chicago magazine referred to The Flesh Hungry Dog Show as an uber-inclusive, alterna-queer, mini-rock extravaganza and possibly the most diverse scene in the city.
Devin & The Straights Devin & The Straights are leading the movement of contemporary urban country music. Being firmly rooted in classic country, yet having his own unique stories to tell, lead vocalist Devin has created a band that is a perfect hybrid in sound and identity. Within their first year of performing, Devin & The Straights were applauded as one of the best new acts to come out of Chicago. High acclaim continues to match this bands unique evolution. Along their way to this years full-length studio album, Cowboy Nights, lead vocalist Devin and his gang have been praised in the Chicago Tribune, Metromix Television, TimeOut Chicago, the Red Eye, and by a diverse mix of fans across the world.
The Honeybees Formed more than nine years ago by Barbara Clifford (vocals) and Theresa Drda (drums), the Honeybees were created with the idea that female vocals can be reinvented to make an important impact on todays music scene. The two core members worked with various personnel over the years. Today, the Honeybees' rock-solid line up includes Rachel Decker (vocals), Mark Braun (guitar/steel), Manny Guevara (guitar) and Michael Hogeorges (bass). With the tight, expressive harmonies of Barbara and Rachel, and Theresa as the driving force behind the drums, these three women represent the feminine strength behind the name. From there, the Honeybees move into a driving, modern energy mode driven by the varied guitar sounds of Mark, Manny and Michael.
The bands musical influences range from rockabilly and roots legends such as Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Brenda Lee, Chuck Berry, The Sonics, Ricky Nelson, and T-Bone Walker to modern artists such as Rosie Flores and the Paladins.
Civil Servant Civil Servant is a rich savory blend of surf tones, accented by a pinch of country, sprinkled with dirty keyboards, subtle notes of a sampler, while baked in a garage rock oven filling the room with the sweet scent of vocal harmonies. New on the scene, Civil Servant is made up of former members of Jupiter and a current member of Lets Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop.
