Cuban Women in Hip-Hop/Short Films

Director Jamiah Adams will be present for a post-screening Q&A session. Cuban women in Havana create and perform socially conscious hip-hop, everywhere from clubs to sidewalks. In interviews, they discuss the ways in which the rhymes they create serve as a vehicle for self-expression and community involvement.

Join us for short films and the presentation of a rough cut /exclusive preview of the documentary feature, MUJERES DE HIP-HOP CUBANA.

Resistance (Italy). Filmmakers: Bradly Dever Treadaway, Justin Randolph Thompson. Resistance is a contemporary revisitation of "The Ballad of John Henry"€ that addresses the balance/imbalance of nature/technology.

She Rhymes Like a Girl (USA). Director: JT Takagi. Toni Blackman and the FreeStyle Union are challenging the male dominated world of hip hop and empowering women to speak their minds in freestyle workshops. This is a music video/documentary that speaks to building a movement of female MCs.

Mujeres de Hip-Hop Cubana (USA/Cuba). Director: Jamiah Adams. Cuban women in Havana create and perform socially conscious hip-hop, everywhere from clubs to sidewalks.
