Mary Jenson & Beyond Standard Jazz
Mary Jenson & Beyond Standard Jazz will headline the next Vallejo Jazz Society concert at the Bay Terrace Theatre/MIRA in Vallejo on Sunday, July 14 at 5pm.
Funky, dreamy, full of rhythmic melodies, Mary Jenson & Beyond Standard Jazz is a fusion of jazz, world and pop music. Originals, contemporary covers and beautiful jazz standards are featured in Mary's live performances.
Winner of Indie Music Channel's 2012 "Best Female Jazz Artist" Mary Jenson's soulful voice takes you on a journey through original music and masterfully reinvented jazz and contemporary covers.
Born on an Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mary Jenson is the 6th of 8 children. Her childhood as a military brat was a nomadic one, moving from Mississippi to California, Germany, Georgia, and then back again to California by the time she was 9 years old.
Classically trained but with a great love of jazz and contemporary music, Mary spent time on the Left Coast of California as a small market radio disc jockey, developing a love of music crossing genres and perspectives. Her 2009 debut CD Close Your Eyes was a reflection of that broad perspective and earned her reviews that acknowledged her wide range.
Mary's current projects include BEYOND STANDARD JAZZ, which she describes as a portal for music that defies genre, and ARTsongs, a collection of exquisitely beautiful melodies.
Mary has performed at various clubs and performance halls around the country; highlights include the Detroit Institute of the Arts while on tour with the George Cole Quintet, Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland for her CD Release Concert of BEYOND and most recently, the Fenix in San Rafael.
The quintet features Mary Jenson/vocals, Jeff Chambers/bass, Rich Armstrong/trumpet, Steve Carter/keyboard and Rob Rhodes/drums.
A not-for-profit organization formed in September of 2010, the Vallejo Jazz Society's mission is to heighten awareness of jazz in Vallejo and nearby communities by sponsoring concerts throughout the year at various local venues. The organization also provides jazz-related educational resources such as concerts and clinics to local schools and youth organizations.
Tickets for the concert are $10 ($5 for VJS members) and may be purchased at the door or online at www.vallejojazzsociety.com. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
