Unshackling Education
Unshackling Education: Questions. Reflections. Suggestions, chronicles the life of a young Kenyan boy grappling between life in Nairobi's informal settlements and the disconnection he faces with what and how he is learning in school.

In 2012, the agenda to school the world is largely unchecked.  Governments, corporations and development organizations promote schooling as the only, and most important form of learning, with little questioning of how the western formal schooling model and curriculum has displaced indigenous knowledges, and does not teach students how to survive in their environment.  Unshackling Education, is an invitation to discuss how we can make learning more relevant to students' lived experiences and co-create alternative learning spaces which nurture creativity and community.

Elimu Sanifu  which we translate from Kiswahili to mean Re-inventing Learning  is a team of people who are seeking to open windows of learning opportunities with young Kenyans, by financing their secondary schooling, while adding value to it. We work primarily with youth from Nairobi's informal urban settlements (i.e. slums), as guides, encouraging them to know and love themselves and to re-connect with their interests and talents in order to self-direct their own learning and living. We offer workshops in re-skilling hands, promoting self-reliance and resourcefulness; and support youth to lead the changes they dream of in their home and school communities.    We demonstrate respect and appreciation of African history and knowledges, to engender pride in their past, in order to motivate their present and future.  Please visit our blog to find out more about our approaches and philosophy www.elimusanifu.org

In Fall 2011, Unshackling Education was conceived and co-created by Elimu Sanifu co-founders Rehana Tejpar and Wangui Kimari alongside Daniel Ellis.  Together they crafted this play as a way to ask questions, promote reflection and ignite discussion around the kind of education we are giving our children and how we can take steps to decolonize it.
