The Picture of Happiness: Brad Hampton and Patti Loach. Directed by Rae Ellen Bodie.
The Picture of Happiness tells the true story of the discovery of an old photograph that Brad Hampton finds in his grandmother's basement when he is just twenty-three years old.

Hidden away for decades, the photo, taken just before WWII, is of two soldiers sitting on a picnic blanket - the picture of happiness. Knowing that one of the men is his grandfather Bill, Brad asks his mother who the other man is.  Silenced by her response - "We don't talk about it.  We never talk about it" - Brad realizes that he's uncovered not just an old photograph, but a family secret.  Wanting to know who his grandfather really was, Brad holds his curiosity in check until one day, while chatting on the phone with his mother, Brad reminds her of the photograph.  This initial conversation and the ones that follow reveal the story of the photograph and form the basis of the show. Over the course of a funny, moving and intimate hour, Brad makes the connection between his life today and the life his grandfather lived in 1943.

Directed by Rae Ellen Bodie, Brad and pianist Patti Loach lovingly and hilariously depict a colourful cast of characters through storytelling and songs* from the worlds of contemporary cabaret and musical theatre.

An intimate story of family, food and love, The Picture Of Happiness is performed in small venues with limited seating. The June 1 performance is taking place at 52 Pine Crescent, Toronto in the Beaches.**

Please feel free to bring a bottle of wine with you to the event - we'll provide glasses! - and stay after the show to mix, mingle, share stories and meet Brad and Patti.

Admission is limited to thirty people, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

*songs by David Friedman, Maury Yeston, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Mercer & Mancini, John Bucchino, Jason Robert Brown, Michel Legrand, Amanda McBroom, Gerald Sternbach, Christine Lavin, and Alan & Marilyn Bergman.

"Toronto actor Brad Hampton has developed an excellent cabaret show with Patti Loach. Hampton is charismatic, he and Loach have excellent chemistry, the songs are just the right mix of funny, touching and irreverent, and the show's timing is impeccable, thanks to director Rae Ellen Bodie's careful guidance."   John Terauds, Musical Toronto
